1. Petrified Waterfalls: hilltop springs source growing formation
Called ‘Hierve el Aqua’ – translated literally as ‘Boil the Water’ – this landmark is southeast of Oaxaca City. Oaxaca state itself is in the southeast of Mexico, with only one other state (of Chiapas, famous for its Amber) separating it from Guatemala. In any case – what’s happening here happens in only one other place in the world – Turkey. A remote hilltop is home to multiple springs welling up out of the earth and dripping downwards at a trickle, rich in minerals (primarily Calcite), that harden into the ‘stalagtitic’ stone waterfalls we see here. There are 3 green pools (2 of which have been harnessed by human-built, rounded retaining walls) that stem the flow of water down the hill, and create the most sublime, healing water swimming holes. I was blessed to visit this natural wonder with my family, and we recommend our tour guide: @ZapotecTravelByLily (offering indigenous woman-centered cultural experiences). I’m always pleased when my travel allows me to continue to produce stone-centered (CrystalConcentric, if you will) content.

3. Artisanal Candlemaking: from drip to dazzling
During a family trip to Oaxaca, Mexico – in the southeast of the country (with only Amber-famous Chiapas state separating it from Guatemala) – we were blessed to visit this family-based, candle-making community. They make everything from simple drip candles – which they thicken one by one, turning a great big wheel of them – to intricately carved and leafed masterpieces. We bought a few, ’cause they’re just so great. And we recommend our tour guide: @ZapotecTravelByLily, who offers curated experiences centering indigenous women of the Zapotec culture.
4. Perspective (some thoughts on life and the world)
While blissfully out of the loop – in a far away, heavily indigenous state of Mexico with my family – I was blessed to experience many sites and people, including visits to pre-Columbian ruins, craft workshops and markets, great eating and cooking.
Meanwhile, the world continues to get down with its bad self – scapegoating and hiding its head in the sand – while we continue to strive and thrive, appreciating life and building, with Love.
